The Google Zoo – 2016
This is the name of the current global algorithm operated by Google. Also known as the “semantic search engine”, Google Hummingbird is designed to allocate rank based on a complex range of elements including both the form and meaning of words in context. Earlier algorithms ranked websites based on similar factors but did not include the level of semantic relationship that Hummingbird does. This algorithm was launched in August to October 2013 and completely replaced its predecessor. This was the first major upgrade to Google’s algorithm since ‘Caffiene’, launched in 2010. Post Hummingbird, Google also provides several UI/UX improvements in search results pages.

This algorithm sub-part was first released in early 2011 and specifically targets issues around website content. For any site, the overall content volume and quality is assessed and sites failing to meet a quality criteria are demoted in search results pages below others that do meet the criteria. Panda affects the entire site, so I recommend that any pages in your site that don’t positively contribute to your UI/UX value be blocked by robots. Panda updates were re-released numerous times in the following two years but has been integrated into Hummingbird since March 2013.

Another algorithm sub-part, launched in April 2012, that targets sites which manipulate back-linking to gain SEO strength. Prior to release it was possible for sites to gain excessive ranking credit from metrics relating to link volume rather than link quality. Many sites that had operated link building programmes in the past to gain rank were penalised for having links with little or no relevance to their websites. Google recommends that links should be acquired naturally via a sharing process. I suggest you be very careful where you get links from, what volume you gather, the length of time they are spread over and the physical or virtual locations where they come from.
