Google Ranking Factor – Text content volume per genre
The amount of text that is in your site will have a large impact on whether the site gains rank organically, but surely not all websites in all genres are treated equally?
Consider a site that is about news in the fashion industry. Sites like that would most likely have a lot of content that say discusses latest fashion trends, latest events in the industry, sports a large collection of images and probably carries a significant history of posts or pages covering a span of time. Right?
That might be considered ‘normal’ for the genre.
Now consider a site that is about a plumbing service offered locally to residents in the near vicinity of the plumber’s home or office. This kind of site is likely to have a few pages, probably no more than 5 or 6. There would be a home page, perhaps a few services pages, an about us page and a contact page.
Texts would probably consist of descriptions of the services and minimal overview about the plumber or his/her company, perhaps some testimonials, and then basic contact details.
This would also be considered relatively ‘normal’ for the plumbing genre. Agree?
Both websites may be able to gain page 1 or position 1 rank in Google, despite the huge difference in content volume.
So Google must surely judge content volume by genre and probably places websites within a probability set that is unique to the genre.
But in this case, it’s because plumbers typically service a small area, and fashion websites might appeal to national or even global audiences – so their target markets are vastly different. The plumber is not after anywhere near as much reach. So Google isn’t judging the plumber’s site against the fashion site based on content volume at all.
Makes sense right?
That’s great news if you are a plumber, because it means all you need to do is have enough content to beat out the competition in the same market, but you don’t have to write so much that it ends up like a book!
Work it this way – create say 25% better content volume that the website you’re trying to beat in search and have a good plan for sharing that content and you’ve got a great chance of taking the higher ranked position.
