Google Ranking Factor – Links in Footers & Widgets
A common practice for many website developers is to place a link to themselves in the footer of the websites they build.
While the link acquisition speed will be reasonably progressive and natural as new sites are built and made live, the fact that they are clearly unnatural placement and irrelevant to the nature of the website’s content is the issue.
A similar problem occurs with widget builders whose widgets are used extensively in websites around the world, and which may contain a link back to themselves. All such links should be set to rel=”nofollow” to remove attribution of pagerank or relevance from the source to the destination.
There may be other reasons you have obtained links like this other than being a web developer, but because the link is based in a template or widgetized element and may also have little relevance, they should be avoided.
